Assembly Minority Leader Jon Bramnick on Monday introduced a resolution censuring Gov. Phil Murphy for violating his own executive order.
“No one is above the law, especially the person who enacts the law,” the minority leader said.
Murphy attended Black Lives Matter protests in Hillside and Westfield on June 7, days before gathering limits on protests were lifted.
His attendance drew sharp criticism from Republican officials who claimed the governor’s executive orders were being enforced unequally.
The unusual but not unheard of move to censure Murphy could force Assembly Democrats to deal with political fallout from the governor’s protest appearances.
If Bramnick makes a motion to make the resolution the order of the day at Thursday’s Assembly session, Democrats would likely be forced into a roll call vote on whether to consider the measure.
